passion

It has been said that if you are doing what you are passionate about, you will never burn out.

I have so many things that I really enjoy.  Then, there are those few things that I am truly passionate about.  It is a rare thing for me to spend much time doing those few things.  I have found that much of my life has been spent doing things that while I may enjoy them, they are not my passion.  Tomorrow I have the privilege of doing something I love.   I once was passionate about it.  I think I am still am in some ways, but…well it reminds me of college…

I entered FSU as a music major. I was passionate about seeing kid’s lives changed through music.  In time I began to understand that there is much more to a child than just their love of music.  So, I changed majors. I became a elementary school teacher.

Now, back to my story. Tomorrow I get to lead a gathering of people before the throne.  It was once my biggest passion.  Again, I still really enjoy it, but there is much more to people than just 15-20 minutes of face time with God in a room.  I have begun to embrace the bigger picture of a life of worship.  In a way I feel bad sharing this, yet, having been able to see lives of worship, I think I like them better.  People, not just events of songs.

Now, having said this I suppose I may come across strong.  I love times in worship with a community. There is really very little that is better than that.  I suppose it is not so much the medium that has changed, but my desire to see lives transformed has changed.  Transformation may happen in a gathering, but I agree with Stephen, my friend, who says that transformation comes a lot easier when you are working it out in life with others.

So, for all of us who tomorrow will  bring acts of service which may not line up with our deepest passion, may God bless the work of your hands and your faithfulness in serving our King.

Not too strong at all, dude. I think more people need to hear what you have to say about developing passions and passions that broaden as we learn more. Tons of people are stuck thinking church work is the only way to meet passion X or are so centered in on one style of musical worship that they can’t see the forest for the trees. It’s interesting that you write about that tonight. I’ve been reminded of similar things recently and I think we’ll touch on that this Sunday.
